Why does my business need a website?
Many people, companies and businesses these days have a website. A website design will give you and your company a very professional profile. Designing websites is a specialised skill. A website will contribute to increasing your number of customers and sales, as people can view your company and your products and services in the comfort of their own home on your website, keeping your company ahead of your competition. Many companies in the UK have experienced increased profits directly relating to their company websites.
How much will it cost and do I have to pay VAT?
Our cheapest package for a basic one page brochure-style website is £150, but obviously each project will be different and so we will quote with each website in mind. VAT does not apply to our charges.
Are there any additional costs?
No – we will quote you the complete price for all your needs and any updates you may wish to add once the site is up and running. If there are any possible eventualities which may incur costs, we will let you know before work begins on your site. You will need to pay a small yearly fee for domain registration and hosting, generally around £10 for a domain name and £15 for hosting. We can also help you with this.
How long will it take?
This is entirely dependant on the website, but we aim to complete a basic one-page brochure site in one week once the content has been finalised.
Can you redesign my current website?
Yes – we can do a complete overhaul which is almost as labour intensive as creating a site from scratch whilst retaining the same content. Alternatively we can tweak or update the design of your current site if you just need minimal alterations. We would obviously alter our quote depending on how long it would take us.
I’m not from the Bristol area – are you still available for commission?
Yes – we can discuss your project over the phone or by email so there is no limit to where we can work. Material for the website can be posted or sent by email. Several of our previous clients have been situated further afield and our working relationship hasn’t been compromised as a result. If you need us to photograph your premises or services for inclusion, we would travel to do this and quote with this in mind.
How do I choose my URL and domain name?
Your URL is the web address for your website – www.example.com and the domain name for this would be example.com.
You can search
here to see if a name is still available. If a URL and domain name have already been registered, you can try alternatives until one is available. We will help your through the process of registering your domain name so that you can re-register and retain the control of your web address once we have completed your website.
What is hosting?
When an internet user visits your website, they access the code and image files for your site which are stored on a remote server. In order to transfer the information to a remote server, you need to pay a hosting company to allow you to use their storage space. Again, we will help you through this process and recommend reliable and affordable options so that you can retain control of your web hosting once your site is up and running.
What if I already have a domain name and hosting?
The domain is easily transferable to your newly designed site and you can continue to use your hosting account.
Will I get a business email address?
Yes – when you register a domain name and pay for hosting on a remote server you will be given several options to create email addresses for your chosen domain name, ie yourname@example.com
You can then forward these to your current email addresses or access the email directly.
What is site maintenance?
Site maintenance is a fee paid regularly to keep your site updated with new content that you provide. Most good web sites have new content updated regularly. Fresh content is what will keep your visitors coming back. This is an optional service that we provide for our customers. If you want to update your website yourself that is fine and we can show you how to do this with a HTML editor.
Why can’t I find my site in a search engine such as Google?
Once your site has been submitted to the top Search Engines they may require several weeks, or even months to actually scan and list your web site in their directory. How fast your site is listed depends on each individual Search Engines database update schedule.
What happens after I complete the online quote form?
We will reply promptly by phone or email with an outline of a price and timescale along with any ideas or suggestions that we feel relevant to your site. If we need more information before we provide you with a quote, we will get in touch with you.
I would like you to design my website. What do you need from me?
- Photos, logos or pictures we can use
- A written description or outline of what your business offers
- Your contact details for your customers, ie email, phone no.
- A price guide for your products or services
- Any additional content you want to include, ie staff information, company philosophy, opening times, links to other websites etc.
Do you need a deposit for the work?
Yes – we generally ask for 25% from clients before we begin work.
Who owns the website once it is complete?
You will have full ownership of the site and content and will receive a CD containing the website files to retain for future use.
I want to enable customers to shop online through my site. What are my options?
We can currently offer two options for online payment - PayPal or a free shopping cart option called Mal’s eCommerce. PayPal is a leading method of payment worldwide which is linked to a bank account or can accept credit card payments and is used to transfer funds securely for online transactions. The rates charged to sellers are 3.4% + 20p, and this drops significantly as your business increases. Mal’s eCommerce is a shopping cart system that is remotely hosted. With the free version, you can accept PayPal, offline payments like checks, and credit cards if you have your own way to charge them already. It will store the numbers for you to run offline. We can implement either of these for you depending on your needs.
Can I see how many visitors I’ve had to my site?
Yes – using a system developed by Google called Analytics, we will implement some non invasive code into your site which will collect information about who has visited.
What is SEO – Search Engine Optimisation?
SEO is a method of engineering a website to enable it to be correctly indexed by search engines such as Google, Yahoo or MSN. These include ensuring each page has Keywords to describe the site, alternative text for images, a Sitemap, Breadcrumbs (links leading back to the main page), text links (not Flash), correct file naming protocol, and other methods which we implement as standard when we code our websites.
In addition, other free methods can be utilised to help users find your site through a search engine, such as ensuring that you are registered with Google’s Local Business Centre so you appear on Google Maps. If you require this, we can guide you through the process.
Should I pay for SEO?
No, unless you have a badly designed website which does not adhere to the basic concepts of SEO. In this case, you should ask for a quote to have your site redesigned. In some cases, only a small amount of changes will be required to increase your rankings on a search engine, and we can give you a reasonable quote for this if need be without lengthy redesigns.
Some unscrupulous companies charge large sums for SEO promising that you will rank highly on Google as a result, but most of the key aspects of SEO should be included within a design as standard. Money does not buy high rankings but good website engineering does.
